The MC14543B BCD to 7-segment latch/decoder/driver is designed for LCD readout and is built with complementary MOS (CMOS) enhancements. The circuit provides 4-bit memory latch, 8421 BCD-7 segment decoder and driver functionality. The device features logic levels for inverted output combinations. The phase (Ph), interval (BI), and latch disable (LD) inputs are used to invert the truth table phase, interval the display, and store BCD codes, respectively. For liquid crystal (LC) readings, a square wave is applied to the Ph input of the circuit and to the electrically common backplane of the display. The output of the circuit is connected directly to the segments of the LC reading. For other types of readings, such as light-emitting diode (LED), incandescent, gas-emitting, and fluorescent readings, connection diagrams are given on this data sheet. Applications include instrument (e.g., counters, DVMs, etc.) display drivers, computer/calculator display drivers, steering display drivers, and a variety of clock, meter, and timer uses.
